We seven souls, late of Columbia,
The Gem of the Ether
Now float, truly weightless,
In eternal orbit around the Earth we love.
Lost in an instant, we did not suffer
As limbs, vessels and organs
Were torn asunder,
Our ashes spread in a wide swath
Over the Texas countryside.
We were men, women, officers, physicians,
An Indian, an African-American, an Israeli.
As we look down at the blue and white sphere
We know we fly over murder, rape, war, terror and hatred.
If only these could end
So that mankind could continue the conquest of space.
To explore Mars and beyond, and colonize
Another world in another solar system.
We seven souls, late of Columbia,
The Gem of the Ether
Shall be watching you forever.
